What to write in a retirement card
Grateful, specific-enough lines for a colleague’s retirement—without roast-level jokes or empty clichés stacked three deep.
Keep it human
Name one real contribution if you can. Wish them rest and ownership of their time. Skip “don’t be a stranger” theater if you will not follow up.
What not to say
- “You’re too young to retire!” Undercuts their choice. Congratulate instead.
- Jokes about being useless / put out to pasture Land wrong more often than they land funny.
- Long complaints about who will replace them Makes their day about the team’s anxiety.
- Pressure to consult unpaid forever Optional; don’t draft them back in the card.
